Scientists make predictions, that’s how we know that our models are correct. If we can forecast that something will happen before it happens we must have a good idea of just what’s causing it to happen.
In my blog back on January the first I mention the total solar eclipse that’s going to happen on the 17th of August of this year and scientists have been predicting eclipses now since the time of the Roman emperor Claudius.
A few predictions have been some of the greatest moments in the history of science, such as when Edmund Halley predicted that a comet would return or when Paul Dirac predicted the existence of Anti-matter. Just a few years ago the discovery of the Higgs boson confirmed a prediction made by Peter Higgs back in the 1960s.
Now Astronomer Lawrence Molnar of Calvin College in Grand Rapids Michigan is making the first ever prediction of the eruption of a Nova, the explosion of a particular star system. The star system in question is called KIC 9832227, a 12th magnitude system in the constellation in the of Cygnus. The system consists of three stars, two of which form a contact binary, that is two stars that are so close to each other that they are “kissing”. See picture below.
Professor Molnar and his team have been studying KIC9832227 for many years now and have noted an acceleration in the orbit period of the two stars, an acceleration which is increasing exponentially. Based on these observations Professor Molnar predicts that in 2022, give or take a year the stars will merge into one and that the resulting explosion will make the 12th magnitude system temporarily visible to the naked eye, a new star or Nova will appear briefly in our night sky.
While not as spectacular as a Supernova, where a star 10 or more times as massive as our Sun explodes in a fireball as bright as an entire Galaxy this is the first time anyone has been bold enough to predict a date on when a nova will occur. I hope that five years from now I get to see KIC 9832227 as it goes Nova. If it does Professor Molnar will have joined the ranks of Halley and Dirac and many others whose predictions have done so much to advance human knowledge. Your question is not off topic. Several other commenters have asking about starting their own blog and I say go for it. To start I recommend Ipage as the host for your site (www.ipage.com) and wordpress for the blog program. Yes it is quite a bit of work but it can be very rewarding and after you get past the learning curve it’s not really very difficult. I do have one small criticism if you don’t mind you need to be a little more careful with your spelling. Look at it this way, if you have a hundred or more people reading your blog every day at least one of them will notice any misspelled word and let you hear about it! Anyway good luck!

It’s not off topic at all. Several people have asked me basically the same question. First of all my website is hosted by Ipage (ipage.com) and the program running the blog is called wordpress. Both cost a little bit but not too much. As far as how much work is involved, well that’s completely up to you. I publish a new post of 500-700 words twice a week and it is a bit of work just trying to think of topics to write about. However it definitely has its rewards!

Not at all off topic. I recommend just go to ipage.com, they’ll set you up with a website. I use wordpress as the program running on my site, you can get it at ipage. The learning curve is kinda steep but after a couple of days playing around I got the hang of it. How much work is involved in running a site depends on you! Good Luck!!!

was hacked and I ended up losing months of hard work
due to no backup. Do you have any methods to prevent hackers?
I haven’t had any problems so far, I’ve got my fingers crossed as I say that. I also have wordpress but I have sitelock as well. If you don’t you might want to consider it. Also I just don’t let out my password to anybody. Finally I never approve any comment with a link to a webpage of any kind. If I see a comment that has a link embedded in it, it goes right in the trash!!!! Hope that helps!!!

Well thanks for the compliment. When I started my blog I just went to Ipage and paid for wordpress. The current version of wordpress I’m using is 4.9.1 and I just chose a simple theme and layout, nothing fancy ’cause I didn’t want anything to get in the way of the posts. I like the old idea of KISS “Keep It Simple Stupid!” Anyway I hope that gives you some ideas and good luck on your site!

Thanks for the comment. As to setting up your own blog I wondered like you whether to go with a free platform or pay for one. One thing to bear in mind is that a free platform will only be available to your readers WHEN YOUR COMPUTER IS ON! That’s right, turn off your computer and nobody can read your blog! I think you can lose a lot of traffic that way.
I decided to go to the IPAGE site and for about $20 bucks a year they host your site. Now that $20 bucks does not include their version of wordpress and then there are other extras you can purchase as well. I get their snapchat protection and visitor statistics so it all ends up costing me a little over $100 a year. And it’s nice to have some technical help available when I need it.

Search Engine optimization is a hard thing for those of us trying to build our audience from scratch. All I can really advise is keep working. Little by little you’ll see some progress. Don’t use too many keywords as Google and other search engines will actually penalize you for that. Really just pick three or four of the best keywords you can think of. Also keep adding new content. I post twice a week so in a sense I get eight keywords out there every week. Just keep plugging!

My programmer is trying to persuade me to move to .net
from PHP. I have always disliked the idea because of the expenses.

Thanks for the comment but I’m sorry to have to say your questions are a bit beyond my expertise. I only have the one website and wordpress has been fine for me. As far as importing your wordpress posts onto a new platform, if your programmer doesn’t know how to do that I’d consider that a good reason NOT to move to the new platform. You question isn’t off topic at all. Is keeping up a blog a lot of work, well it certainly can be. I post twice a week with each post at between 600-900 words so that takes me about two afternoons just writing. Then there’s the research and finding applicable images to add to the writing, which takes a bit of time. However since I like keeping up on scientific advances that’s something I’d be doing anyway. Actually publishing the post onto my blogsite only takes 10-15 minutes so that’s no big deal. So really for me it comes down to about two afternoons a week worth of work. Now as far as tips are concerned, my blog is hosted by ipage and I purchased wordpress through them. It was pretty easy getting setup and isn’t too expensive, and it was nice having someone to answer my questions when I had them. Anyway I hope that helps and good luck with your blog!

Thanks for the comment. For my blog I just went to Ipage and they set me up with wordpress and snapchat for logins and comments. As you must have noticed. I haven’t had much problem with security although I do have a strict rule that only I get to do any posts and any comments that contain a link in them are simply trashed. I really do think it’s more a factor of you keeping control over your site than anything else! Hope that helps!

Thanks for the comment. I started my blog by going to ipage as my host, they supplied me with wordpress as a platform and the whole thing took a couple of days before my blog was up and running although I’m still learning new things on occasion! Hope that helps and good luck!
